Mosi
Is More Than Your Average Museum.Mosi
is a great way to spend a rainy day in Tampa, Florida. They are
located at 4801 E. Fowler Ave. The phone number is (813)987-6000 and
all of
the exhibits are inside with a partially covered walkway to the second
building. Parking is free.
The museum has
a planetarium as well as imax movies. Both of these have an additional
ticket to be purchased. The prices are reasonable. A family
of five can
see all there is to see for under $100. There are several show times
throughout the day as well as several different shows. Arrive at least
10 minutes early as they fill up quickly, especially the
good seats.
The Museum of Science and Industry is
completely hands
on. The second floor of the main building is dedicated to weather
science. There are interactive maps illustrating natural disasters as
well as rooms that simulate weather situations. These can be a little
scary for children under five but extremely educational for your older
ones.
Make sure to get a map when you enter as there are few signs and lots
of dead ends.
There are several gift shops
but only one cafeteria style restaurant. Food is extremely limited and
overpriced. The restaurant is located on the first floor and offers
sandwiches and salads. My advice is to eat before you go and pack some
snacks. The gift shop does offer some unique souvenirs at moderate
prices. There is very little staff available to answer questions or
offer direction.
The second building which houses
the planetarium is full of hands on experiments involving not only
science but math concepts as well. This section is best suited for
children third grade and under. Everything in this area contains large
pieces so even the smallest children are safe and entertained.
For
groups of fifteen or more be sure to call ahead because they do offer
group discounts. MOSI also has limited time events so there is always
something new to see.
